Remembering that you are selling/advising a service not an actual product and that 80% of the people who meet you for the very first time will have Googled (not sure if that’s actually a real word yet!) your name your Personal Brand I’m sure you will agree is extremely important. A Personal Brand is the way in which you market yourself and the way in which you are perceived.
Advice businesses with more than one Adviser are struggling with the concept of allowing them to create their own Personal Brand but I’d like to suggest that I believe it’s critical that they do so that they have ‘control’ over how they come across. Everyday people are using the Internet to search for answers, to find people, to read reviews, make sure when you are found, assuming you want to be found, that your Personal Brand positions you as you wish to be. Yes, the 2 most common ways online are through LinkedIn and hopefully your website so have a look now and see if what you find is what you want others to find.
There are many things to consider when developing your Personal Brand, here are just 5 which I believe are an excellent starting point:
1. Define your core values – write them down and place them somewhere you can see them
2. Make sure your words, actions and efforts all point to your core values – authenticity
3. Identify actual words, actions and efforts that DON’T point to your core values so that you don’t sabotage your brand.
4. Use LinkedIn and other social media platforms to reinforce your brand
5. Live by your values -model your values and never compromise
It takes time to build a personal brand, months, years in fact so start now if you haven’t already! Even if, on a basic level, you make sure your personal brand strategy is written down and encompasses LinkedIn and your website so, the basic profile etc. Then, over time as you develop your marketing strategy start to take it up a level and contribute information, thoughts and insights through various channels, strive to be recognised as the trusted expert.
You don’t have to rush off tomorrow and start writing information and joining every possible forum you can find. But, would I would suggest is that you write your brand strategy this month and then, as your confidence builds and you grow, stretch yourself and take it to the next level.
Unfortunately or I believe fortunately, you can’t hide in this world today. You will be found so take control of your personal brand as soon as you can.
