Much has been written about the art of storytelling and sometimes I think all the talk has stopped the storytelling! People are too scared to tell stories not wanting to stuff it up because they haven’t followed the complex story set up framework!
If that really is the case it’s a massive shame and a big issues for the industry.
Because sharing stories; talking about what it is that you do can lead to fabulous results not only for your business but also for the profession as a whole.
When to tell stories?
All the time! Seriously though, whenever you catch up with a referral partner, whenever someone says, “How was your day?” or “What’s been happening?” or “How’s business?” you know those questions that typically get answered “Good thanks, busy as usual” STOP and tell them about the great work that you’ve done. I’m not suggesting that you share your client’s private details or information but there is no reason why you couldn’t reply by saying something along the lines of “Great thanks. Just helped a family get their finances in order and saved them x amount each year” or “Really good thanks. Just helped a husband and wife set up their retirement fund, their off to Europe in a few years and wanted to make sure they can travel business class!”.
Many Advisers find it hard to articulate what it is that they do, tell a story, that will give people an excellent idea of what it is you do.
Once you’ve finished telling the story say, “Feel free to share that story” the simple fact that you have given permission to share that story increases the chance that it will be – it’s golden!
Perhaps practice sharing stories as a team in your team meetings, do the role playing, it’ll help with the confidence.
