I will confess it has been years since I’ve been on a date and hopefully I wont need to go on one again! [Note to husband who maybe reading this!]. But I wonder what it’s like in this digital world? There can be no such thing as a blind date anymore because everyone has some sort of digital profile that can be checked out beforehand and if you don’t well…………
I was helping an Adviser with his LinkedIn profile the other day because he said “I don’t do LinkedIn” I asked him if he had a LinkedIn profile and he said yes and I said, “Then you do LinkedIn!” How you ‘do’ LinkedIn may be at differing engagement levels but if you have a LinkedIn profile unfortunately or fortunately as I would say, you ‘do’ LinkedIn; you can be found by others who do use it. Knowing that you have a LinkedIn profile and knowing that you can be viewed by anyone at any time wouldn’t you want to make sure that you look your best?
Years ago the experts were claiming that LinkedIn was for your professional side and Facebook for your more social side now they are claiming that your Facebook and LinkedIn profiles should be the same – why? Because of the prolific use and take up of these social sites. The lines are becoming blurred!
A girlfriend recently showed me Tinder, the app that helps you meet someone near to where you may be. If you’ve never seen it, check it out because……..in it’s basic format decisions are being made about future relationships based on how someone looks! You can simply use one finger and click through a variety of pictures and choose one that you like. Luckily we all like different types of people otherwise things could get tricky!
The message here is that we are being ‘trained’ to make decisions quickly based on what we see. Research shows that 80% of us make decisions based on what we see, the digital world is only making it easier for us to make quick visual decisions.
I’m not suggesting that you need to be Australia’s next top model but what is important is that you understand how important it is that you look your best online. That means, a professional shot, a high resolution picture, full spectrum used and so forth.
If you have a LinkedIn profile or even a Facebook profile you are visible online to anyone, anytime, anywhere.
So, if you fancy a date I’m happy to connect and help you with your LinkedIn profile so when those that use LinkedIn do find you [and they will] we can make sure you look and sound your best.
